The Service-oriented, Ownership, Acceptance, and Respect (SOAR) class slated for Tuesdays and Thursdays has come under scrutiny for its monotonous and redundant content; the curriculum seems to ask students repetitively to answer similar questions and focuses merely on teaching them basic niceties. It is important to understand that the education system is, and should always be, about equipping students with diverse and complex knowledge sets and not merely emphasizing politeness. According to a study from Harvard Graduate School of Education, young people benefit more from lessons in critical thinking and complex problem-solving than from simple etiquette lessons (Harvard Graduate School of Education, Raising Caring, Respectful, and Courageous Children). Therefore, request the education authorities to revise or discontinue the SOAR classes scheduled for Tuesdays and Thursdays. We want our students to grow, thrive, and be prepared for the challenges ahead. Please sign this petition to bring about this needed change.
