Disband, Replace, and Investigate Kenya’s CMOs
The Issue
Kenyan musicians, producers, and rights holders have contributed to this industry for decades—recording music, performing, producing, and building Kenya’s sound locally and globally. Yet despite our talent and hard work, many of us still struggle to earn fair income from our music due to opaque royalty systems and long-standing mismanagement by Collective Management Organizations (CMOs).
Organizations such as MCSK, KAMP, and PAVRISK have faced persistent criticism over lack of transparency, weak governance, and mishandled royalties. Court rulings and KECOBO notices have repeatedly pointed to systemic failures, including licensing disputes and regulatory confusion, leaving musicians, producers, and venues unsure of compliance and rightful earnings.
Our Ask
We call for the total disbursement, replacement, and an independent Commission of Inquiry into Kenya’s CMOs, focusing on:
- A full financial audit to account for all royalties collected on behalf of musicians
- A review of governance and leadership structures to restore accountability
- A clear and unified licensing framework that protects musicians and simplifies compliance for venues
- This process must be public and live-streamed, allowing musicians and the public to follow proceedings and rebuild trust in the system meant to protect our rights.
Call to Action
This is a musicians’ issue. If you create, perform, produce, or rely on music for your livelihood, this affects you.

Together, we can demand transparency, fairness, and a royalty system that truly works for Kenyan musicians.
