Disability Access & Parking in Victoria

The issue

Outdated Victorian laws on disability parking and access mean that people with a disability risk parking fines or being told by councils to spend hundreds of dollars using private parking stations to access essential services across the state.

Put simply most Victorian councils somehow believe that a persons disability disappears if a disabled parking bay isn’t available. Placing on those living with a disability or personal need unrealistic expectations around parking and access.

People living with a disability aren’t assured access to parking in newer apartments buildings or some work situations.

• A recent study shows only 6% of local government employees have a disability.

• 45% of people with a disability live in or near poverty.

• The disability employment rate in Victoria public sectors has fallen year on year despite being prioritised.

• Only 53% of people with a disability are in the workforce.

It's time to change these antiquated laws to allow people with disabilities to live a life free from discrimination, negative community attitudes and allow them to live an independent life with easier access to homes, employment and facilities.
