Direct Supermarkets to Limit Single-Use Plastic for Groceries

Direct Supermarkets to Limit Single-Use Plastic for Groceries
The Issue
As concerned citizens & parents, we have pledged to leaving a healthier & safer planet for future generations. Yet, if we persist in our lazy & negligent attitudes towards single-use plastics, we may not have a planet left to offer. Our waterways & oceans are brimming with plastic, threatening aquatic life & encroaching on our own food chain.
It is estimated that 14 million tons of plastic are dumped into the oceans annually.
We are recycling more than ever but the soft plastics are still not widely recyclable. At best they require transportation to specific collection sites like shops or supermarkets. This lack of convenience often results in plastic waste ending up in landfills instead of recycling centres. Supermarkets are a significant contributor to single-use plastic production. They wrap most items unnecessarily in this material, despite the development of biodegradable or reusable alternatives.
By targeting supermarket policies directly, we can contribute towards achieving 6 of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. It's high time supermarkets take responsibility for their role in the global plastic waste problem.
We call on all supermarkets to drastically curtail their use of single-use plastic wrap for goods that do not need it. Our future & the future of our children is in grave danger. We can no longer ignore our obligation towards creating a more sustainable planet. Please, sign this petition & implore supermarkets to make a pivotal move towards a sustainable future.
