Direct Half Moon Bay City Council to Reject Hyatt Hotel Proposal

Direct Half Moon Bay City Council to Reject Hyatt Hotel Proposal
The Issue
We, the following Coastside residents, urge the HMB City council to deny the Hyatt’s current application for a permit for the following reasons: Half Moon Bay is a place with immense natural beauty and uniquely charming architecture. This picturesque town is under threat. The proposal, a 102 room Hyatt Hotel and possible additional 16 townhomes, if built according to the current plans, will violate our town's architectural code and alter our town's look, feel and natural environment forever. The project fails to align with our town’s building regulations and established aesthetics and should be rejected. One of the many examples where this proposal is inconsistent with the City plan:
Chapter 18.37 VISUAL RESOURCE PROTECTION STANDARDS
18.37.010 Purpose and intent.
The specific purpose and intent of these visual resource protection standards are to:
A. Protect the scenic and visual qualities of coastal areas as a resource of public importance.
B. Ensure that new development is located so as to protect views to and along the ocean and scenic coastal areas.
City codes and ordinances exist for a reason - to uphold the architectural harmony of our town and to protect our local environment. The City Planning Commission has an obligation to enforce these codes which have painstakingly been developed over many years of public discussion and architectural planning to preserve the attractiveness and beauty of our coast. We insist that the commission uphold these regulations and reject the proposed Hyatt Hotel’s construction plan. We must preserve the characteristic charm and ecological sanctity of Half Moon Bay. Consider the current view entering south HMB from Hwy 1. You see an unobstructed view of the hills. Consider the view if the project is approved and built. You have length of 1 and 1/2 NFL football fields of view erased. Would most people rather see hills or hotel/condos?
The Hyatt Proposal estimates an additional 209,000 annual car trips annually coming and going to the Hyatt, right in the heart of the daily traffic jam coming and going to and from Cunha, Hatch, and HMB High. How can this not be a horrific inconvenience for those who commute and have students?
We need your support to maintain the integrity and beauty of our town. Please, let us stand together. Sign the petition and be heard. Help us direct the City Planning Commission to reconsider the Hyatt Hotel’s design proposal and affirm that our City’s architectural code and environmental well-being are of utmost importance.
The process has moved from the Planning Commission denying the project on October 22, 2024, now to the City Council January 30, 2025 to hear an Appeal from the developer.
