Good morning all — thank you for the incredible support.
The Kansas City Ballet has reached out to me letting me know they’ve released a public statement committing to “more culturally appropriate representations of Asians in the Nutcracker.” The statement can be read in the link.
As mentioned earlier, Devon Carney, the Artistic Director has also signed the Yellowface.org pledge alongside other national leaders in dance.
I’m encouraged by the Ballet’s swift response to this petition. I hope this provides an opportunity for continued reflection and dialogue on the inclusivity of all elements of the Ballet — from the programming to costumes, to leadership, diversity of dancers and more. Though ballet is rooted in tradition, it has the incredible opportunity and power to lead community conversations on issues of representation, justice, equity and humanity.
Additionally, I hope this petition sheds a light on representations and portrayals of Asian Americans. We Asian Americans have such limited visibility in the community, media, arts, and leadership. I’m pleased this one small representation will be updated to provide more nuance and character, rather than a caricature.
