Like food items, leather/synthetic leather items should also be marked as animal/non animal product.
The Issue
Fellow vegetarians, vegans, animal lovers, in India all the food items are marked either as a vegetarian (green dot) or as a non vegetarian (red dot) product. This is because India has a largest number of vegetarians even with respect to the percentage of nation's population. 20-40% of India's population consider themselves as vegetarians. And this is not mere a food choice but it comes from our culture to not participate in the killings of any living beings, animals included.
The green/red symbol is mandatory and in effect following the Food safety and standards (packaging and labelling) act of 2006. People who are sympathetic to animals (vegetarians, vegans) often face a dilemma while selecting accessories like shoes, wallets, belts etc. because its not very simple to differentiate between a leather and a non leather product and the shopkeeper/sales person may also not know exactly what the product is made up of. So just like food products, there must be a way to identify a cruelty free product. Lets start with leather!
