While helmet laws for e-bikes vary by location, studies show that e-bike riders are less likely to wear helmets, and helmetless riders are at a higher risk of head injuries, especially given the potential for higher speeds and heavier bikes.

E-bikes, with their ability to reach higher speeds, pose a greater risk of serious injuries in crashes compared to traditional bicycles.

Helmets and Safety:
Wearing a helmet is crucial for protecting against head injuries, and studies indicate that helmet use is declining among e-bike riders.

Florida's E-Bike Laws:
In Florida, the helmet law for e-bikes is the same as for bicycles, meaning helmets are required for riders under a certain age (16).

Importance of Education:
There's a need for increased education and awareness about the risks associated with e-bikes, especially for younger riders, and the importance of wearing helmets.

E-bike Specific Helmets:
Some experts suggest that e-bike riders may want to consider helmets that offer additional protection, as the speeds they can reach may warrant it.

Data on Helmet Use:
A study in 2024 revealed that only 44 percent of hospitalized e-bike riders were wearing helmets.

Injury Trends:
Reports indicate that head trauma and injuries resulting from e-bike accidents are on the rise, and many of these injuries are potentially avoidable with proper helmet use.

it’s time for Orange County to aggressively deal with the increasingly dangerous e-bike and moped driver behavior on sidewalks and bike trails by mandating mandatory safety training for all students, and their parents, before student is authorized to drive vehicle to school.
