I find it interesting that whenever I post anything regarding our advocacy to promote mandatory moped/e-bike safety training within the Orange County school system BEFORE a student is authorized to drive a moped/e-bike to school, the number of residents, particularly men, who lash out with negative comments about this being a non-issue and that mandatory training for students is ridiculous.
Below is the latest story regarding a cyclist fatality due to a crash with a scooter; as well as a link to a story where a Key Biscayne cyclist was struck and killed by a child driving an e-bike.
If you take the time to research this subject, cyclist/pedestrian accidents/fatalities with scooters/mopeds and e-bikes are increasing throughout the state, as well as the nation.
There is no reason why Orange County couldn’t be pro-active and implement a mandatory student safety training program before next school year, to educate not only our students, but tbeir parents as well, on the laws and regulations regarding driving these vehicles safely. Doing so will ultimately make our sidewalks and bike trails safer for runners, pedestrians and cyclists.
Before lashing out with your negative commentary, take the time to stop by your local high school right before school dismisses for the day, and observe first hand what we’re talking about. Stop and chat with a school bus driver or a school crossing guard, and allow them a few minutes to share with you their horror stories.
Just because you don’t experience this situation personally, doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
