The Issue

This petition seeks to recognize Morchella americana, commonly known as the American Yellow Morel, as the official state mushroom of Oklahoma. Morels have been a cherished part of Oklahoma’s natural and cultural heritage for generations. Their arrival each spring marks the end of winter and brings families and communities together to forage, cook, and share in a tradition that has been passed down for decades. By officially designating the Morel as Oklahoma’s state mushroom, we can celebrate this time-honored practice and encourage more people to engage with the state’s unique biodiversity.

Oklahoma is home to 12 diverse eco-regions, each supporting a wide variety of plant, animal, and fungal species. Morels play an important role in these ecosystems, forming symbiotic relationships with native trees and soil microbes. Unlike many cultivated mushrooms, morels have eluded large-scale indoor farming efforts, making their seasonal appearance a special event that fosters a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Recognizing Morchella americana as a state symbol would highlight the importance of fungi in Oklahoma’s environment and encourage education about native species.

Beyond its ecological significance, morel foraging contributes to Oklahoma’s economy, generating more than $100,000 in seasonal revenue each year. Many residents sell their harvests at farmers' markets and local businesses, and the demand for fresh morels continues to grow. Promoting morel mushroom foraging as part of the state’s identity could further support small businesses, ecotourism, and sustainable harvesting practices while reinforcing the value of Oklahoma’s natural resources.

By signing this petition, supporters are helping to recognize a species that has deep cultural roots, ecological importance, and economic value to Oklahoma. An official designation would inspire future generations to explore the outdoors, learn about native fungi, and continue the traditions of responsible foraging. This petition calls on Oklahoma’s leadership to take action and ensure that the Morel Mushroom receives the recognition it deserves as an integral part of the state’s identity.
