The Issue

On the morning of January 28, 2025, our father had just finished safely crossing a group of children when a negligent driver ran a red light, striking and killing him. His sudden and tragic loss was a devastating blow to our family and the community. Our father was affectionately known as the Crossing Guard Santa. Each Christmas season, he would dress as Santa while crossing the kids, bringing joy and safety to the children and residents of his neighborhood.

His commitment went beyond ensuring pedestrians safely crossed streets; he evoked a sense of cheer and goodwill within the community he served tirelessly. Every morning and afternoon, come rain or shine, he was a familiar, friendly face providing an invaluable service ensuring the well-being and safety of countless children and residents.

The role crossing guards play in communities is invaluable yet often underappreciated. They are the first line of defense in road safety near schools, providing peace of mind to parents and guardians. The institution of a National Crossing Guard Day on January 28 would honor not only our father's memory, but also recognize the hard work and dedication of ALL crossing guards who contribute to safety and community spirit.

This day would serve as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the vital role crossing guards have in protecting the lives of pedestrians, especially the most vulnerable—our children. Moreover, it presents an opportunity for us to express our gratitude and offer our support to those who fulfill this crucial role every single day.

While many individual schools, districts or some towns recognize their own version of Crossing Guard Day, typically in February, the date varies widely by location, if recognized at all, as most don’t. Our goal is to apply with National Day Calendar, the leading authority in honorary national days, to acknowledge the importance of crossing guards by designating January 28 as the single, unified National Crossing Guard Day. In doing so, we honor all those who, like our father, serve selflessly to ensure the safety of our children and communities. Please sign this petition and join us in making January 28, 2027 our first National Crossing Guard Day a reality.  Together, we can celebrate the everyday heroes who dedicate themselves to our protection on the front lines of road safety!
