A Stronger DHS- Say NO to Walmart
Jan 8, 2015
This article sadly confirms that DHS Mayor Adam Sanchez has turned his back on his supporters and constituents on the proposed Walmart Supercenter and the negative impact it will have on the future of our town. Mr. Sanchez, we will remember come Election Day on November 3rd!
However, this fight is far from over despite whatever backroom deals the Mayor made with Walmart and their lobbyists.
Walmart likely bought the land for pennies on the dollar because the property is zoned for rural residential use, NOT for commercial use. Walmart must get approval from the city council and planning commission to amend the city's General Plan and rezone the site before they can break ground.
The city has considerable discretion to just say NO and keep the site zoned for future residential or other uses. It is not right or fair for Walmart to ask that the city make a big exception for them by amending the General Plan - and the years of work that goes into having a Plan in place- so that they can then turn their cheap rural residential zoned land into a commercial property at a profit.
As always, Walmart is only out for Walmart and does not play by the rules. We need and deserve a better opportunity and neighbor for our town.
