Good evening!
On December 16, 2021, Toronto City Council approved the 2022-2024 bike plan which calls for 100 kilometres of bike lanes to be built over the next three years. While I previously reported the City was looking at only extending the Bloor bike lanes to Royal York, the approved plan calls for them to be extended all the way to Six Points by 2024. You can read my analysis here.
Even with this new plan approved, each bike lane proposed in the plan (including Bloor) will be subject to public consultation and return to City Council for final approval. I encourage you to participate in these consultations as they come up; the details of which I will share as a petition update and on Twitter. With the next Toronto municipal elections happening in October, I encourage you to ask your candidates for office to support the Bloor bike lane extension.
Thanks to the over 800 of you who have signed the petition so far, while I encourage you to keep sharing it with your friends, family, and colleagues. One action I would suggest you to do in the spirit of the Holidays is to thank your councillor and Mayor Tory for supporting the bike plan – unless your councillor is Stephen Holyday or Michael Ford who voted against it – and encourage them to follow through with the plan as soon as possible. There is a lot to do in 2022, but I remain cautiously optimistic we can make this Bloor bike lane extension a reality as long as we keep holding our councillors accountable.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and all the best in 2022! For those of you who want to learn more about the history of the Bloor campaign, I encourage you to read about it on the Bells on Bloor website.
