The Issue

The safety and integrity of any nation rely heavily on the quality of its justice system and its immigration policies. The United Kingdom has long been a haven for individuals seeking asylum and opportunity; however, when individuals who are not UK nationals commit crimes within our borders, it erodes the trust and safety that should be guaranteed to all citizens and residents.

Each year, thousands of non-UK nationals are found guilty of criminal activities ranging from minor offences to serious crimes. Between 2019 and 2020, over 40,000 non-British nationals were arrested, a figure that contributes to the strain on our criminal justice system and increases the nation's expenses, with the cost of incarceration significantly surpassing £37,000 per year per inmate.

Moreover, granting asylum is a privilege meant to offer protection to those escaping persecution, violence, and turmoil. Yet, a minority exploits this privilege, betraying the trust of a country that offers them safety. This calls for stricter policies such as the immediate revocation of asylum status for those who commit crimes after being granted refuge in the UK.

By deporting non-UK nationals who have been found guilty of crimes and revoking asylum for offenders, we can preserve the value of British citizenship and ensure a safer environment for all.

In light of these concerns, I urge the UK government to take decisive action to amend existing immigration laws. Let us safeguard the future of our communities and uphold the values of justice, accountability, and safety in the United Kingdom.
