The issue
With 6,541 immigrants currently incarcerated in Australian prisons, at the time of this petition, they are costing the Australian taxpayers a staggering amount of money each year. The annual cost of housing an inmate ranges between $150,000 and $160,000, leading to a total expense of $1,046,560,000 annually just to keep immigrants behind bars. This is money that could and should be redirected to more constructive avenues, such as improving national security, healthcare, and the education system.
Australia prides itself on being a nation that stands for justice, fairness, and effective governance. However, keeping prisoners who are not citizens of this country is a costly endeavor that stretches our resources. Instead of investing in the maintenance of incarcerated immigrants, we propose that these resources be reallocated to projects that strengthen our country's infrastructure and welfare systems.
Deporting incarcerated immigrants would not only relieve Australian taxpayers of an immense financial burden, but it would simultaneously send a strong message globally that Australia will prioritize its citizens' well-being. It would free up space within our prison systems, allowing for a more focused and effective approach to rehabilitating our own citizens who have found themselves on the wrong path.
This is not an issue of xenophobia or racism, but one of practicality and national interest. Australia must look after its own, supporting programs and initiatives that elevate the quality of life for its residents.
It's time for the government to implement stricter immigration policies that do not allow further increases in immigrant incarceration rates and focus on those currently within the prison system. The deportation process should be efficient and humane, ensuring that the dignity and rights of all individuals are respected during the process.
Join us in urging the Australian government to reallocate our financial resources more wisely by deporting all incarcerated immigrants from our prisons. Please sign this petition to support a move towards a more secure, prosperous, and self-sufficient Australia.
