Two issues exist for what has been the 90ha area of kangaroo habitat for decades. 28ha of the land was sold by the university to a developer. The remaining 60ha is subject to business park plans of the university.
A teleconference is to occur next week with university representatives about the business park plan and the future (or lack thereof) of the kangaroos. I will post the outcome of the teleconference late next week.
Lend Lease has submitted a proposal to Penrith City Council for intensive residential development of the 28ha area. Documents presented by Lend Lease indicate no concern for the kangaroos. A photo herewith shows the intensive dwellings and roads intended to go over cleared stands of ecological communities and grasslands utilised by the kangaroos.
Penrith City Council will consider submissions on the Lend Lease proposal before making a decision.
I appreciate all of you are very busy but if you can find a few moments you can contribute to preservation of sufficient habitat, foraging and water supply for these kangaroos.
All I ask is that you cut and paste the following words:
I am concerned for the preservation, in situ, of the mob of kangaroos which have been part of the ecological and social fabric of the City of Penrith for several decades.
Only two locations in Western Sydney can claim that kangaroo presence for so long – Wianamatta Regional Park and this Werrington site.
The proposed 16 Chapman Street Werrington development has no regard for preserving sufficient habitat, foraging and water supply for these kangaroos.
The development proposal should not be considered in isolation from Western Sydney University's business park plan for its Werrington campus or Transport for NSW's plan for the Leppington to St Marys Rail Line.
The three proposals should be considered as a whole and each contribute to sustaining the existing mob of kangaroos.
Such consideration should also have regard for preserving, in situ, the stands of Commonwealth EPBC Act, NSW BC Act listed ecological communities and derived native grasslands to be found on this land.
