I am petitioning on behalf of my family member, Karina Vetrano  . Karina was brutally murdered and sexually assaulted on August 2, 2016, while out for a jog at 5pm in the afternoon.  Her killer has not been found.  The family cannot even begin to heal until the murderer is brought to justice.   There is DNA evidence that is not a match for people currently in the database.  Familial DNA testing can identify relatives of the suspect in the state and national  DNA database.   This can  allow the police to then narrow down the investigation and identify potential suspects.  This method is used in 9  states -which include  Virginia, California, Michigan, Texas and it is also used in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.  Supporting this petition could potentially allow this method to be used in cases such as Karina's to assist in  identifying potential suspects when a match cannot be attained through traditional DNA testing.  I urge you to support this petition to allow Karina's assailant  to potentially be identified and brought to justice.  Allowing this test to be approved in NY will not only identify Karina's murderer but other unsolved murders in NY.
