Gender-based violence is a national crisis that’s affecting South Africa’s most vulnerable people. The statistics show that a womin still dies every eight hours at the hands of her partner or former partner. A December survey by Stats SA revealed that 21% of womin over 18 in South Africa have experienced violence at the hands of their partner. More and more studies show that black African womin from rural areas and from lower-income families suffer the most at the hands of their intimate partners. South Africa’s femicide rate is five times the international average.
