Abolish Affirmative Action
Abolish Affirmative Action
The Issue
It would be safe to assume that a lot of people have heard about the struggles Asian-American and white students encounter when applying for colleges and universities from some sort of media outlet. Affirmative action policies have made it harder for deserving people to get the quality education they have more than earned. A person's race shouldn't dictate whether or not an individual is accepted into an institution. Yes, diversity is a beautiful concept, and it should be celebrated, but it shouldn't be placed above equality.
Humans have a tendency to not care about something unless it directly affects them. Many people are stuck living inside their own bubbles, uncaring of what is going on outside of those bubbles. Affirmative action in colleges affects everyone although currently, that doesn't seem to be the case. At the moment, white and Asian-American students are at a disadvantage because of these policies; in the future, it will be African-Americans and Latinx students who will be forced to endure unnecessary obstacles to obtain a fundamental human right: access to education. It is expected that Caucasians will be a minority in a few years, and when that happens, the people that are reaping the fruits of affirmative action will be reaping its thorns.
I am an African-American sophomore in high school, and college is at least three years away. I care about abolishing affirmative action because it is only increasing racial tensions that many people have worked hard to end. When the time comes for my friends and me to apply for college, I don't want it to be simpler for me because I'm black and harder for my friends because they are white and Asian-American. I'd like to get accepted into a college and be overjoyed because I know I truly deserved to be a part of the school of my choice, instead of wondering if I only got in because of the color of my skin.
The United States has a power many other countries in the world can only dream of obtaining, the power of influence. Nations around the world pay attention to what we do, and all they're seeing right now is a nation crumbling at the hands of dated problems. This racial discrimination needs to end. Let us snip the issue at the bud by making college applications, as well as everything else in the 21st century, #ColorBlind.
