UCC Biomedical Science Society started this petition to Department of Health Ireland and

This letter was written by a Biomedical Science graduate and sent to Simon Harris while he was working as the Minister for Health.

This letter sheds light on an issue that has not received much attention up until now, but it’s time to change that.

As per the Department of Health Consolidation Pay Scales (1 January 2020), a newly qualified Medical Scientist will earn less than a Medical Laboratory Aide, which for some graduates would mean taking a pay-cut. It is important that we recognise that the work of the Lab Aides is essential but to accept a pay cut after five years of education seems unjust.

The importance of the Medical Scientist has become clearer than ever in light of the recent pandemic. Our scientists are highly educated, dedicated and hold the expertise needed to develop essential testing processes, procedures and protocols.

We believe that it is time that our Medical Scientists get the recognition that they deserve as they are often described as “Healthcare’s Hidden Heroes”.
With that in mind, we would be grateful if you could all sign and circulate the petition linked in our bio. This is an issue that needs to be discussed further and we can only achieve this with your support.
