DNR - everyone deserves dignity and respect at the end of their life

Everyone is entitled, as far as possible,  to dignity at the end of their life, and to die as they would wish.

Decisions about how someone ends their life are a matter of personal choice, to be made as much as possible by the person concerned, who will often want to involve those closest to them and their carers.

We are therefore appalled to see media reports of the current use of Do Not Resuscitate forms. People, many of them elderly, are being denied their dignity and made to feel that they are regarded as unworthy of health care and respect. One such person is Brian Parkin, aged 70 from Leeds, who is seriously ill with cancer - he has been told that the Do Not Resuscitate policy has been applied to him, regardless of his wishes and without his consent.

One crucial reason why we are in this situation is the Johnson government’s failure to prepare for this epidemic, and their bungled response to it.

We believe that every human life is to be valued, and that discussions with elderly and vulnerable people must always be based on this understanding.
