Teach Black History in Schools!

Teach Black History in Schools!

The Issue

History lessons should involve enhancing the knowledge of children and teens on all the major events that have taken place in history, which have led to our current situation. This involves shedding light on Black History and Racism!!

Teaching children/teens about racism and events such as slavery, the rise of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ campaign , Black History milestones, Police brutality  and more should be mandatory and not a choice. If this was the case, we would all be educated on the current situation we are living in and maybe it would not exist if we were all taught from a young age to love one another regardless of the colour of our skin. As Angie Thomas stated ‘if everyone was taught about black kids as kids we wouldn’t need to be still saying ‘Black Lives Matter’!

From Key stage 1 to High school GCSE’s Black History has not been effectively taught as high scools have mostly shed light upon World War I and World War II Nazi Germany devaluing the importance of Black History. Although ‘Black History Month’ is being taught it is not enough and should not only be taught for one month but in depth history lessons should be put into place. The school curriculum needs to be more diverse and proactive on this issue as it can contribute to the process of ensuring racial equity in the UK and will go some way to tackling the issues which have been so widely discussed in the past few days from the murderings of George Floyd and Ahmad Aurbery to the rise of the BLM movement whilst contributing to eliminating racism.
