Put an end to bullying!
Put an end to bullying!
The Issue
According to the Department of Educations own report “Bullying in England April 2013 to March 2018, 17% of young people aged 10 to 15 in England were bullied in the previous twelve months, in a way that made them frightened or upset.” The report goes on to mention that this figure is similar to the previous years!
17%, is 17% too much!
If this figure is similar to the previous years, then that would have to mean that around the same amount of young people are being bullied every year!
According to Ditch The Label, last year roughly 1.5 Million young people in the UK were bullied and that around half went unreported due to fear or embarrassment!
Bullying of young individuals can impact on a child’s mental health and can affect them into adulthood and beyond.
Ditch the Label – Annual Bullying Survey 2019 surveyed 7,347 individuals aged between 12 – 20
In the previous 12 months, based on those who said they had been bullied:
45% of those responded that they felt depressed.
41% Felt Anxious.
33% Felt Suicidal Thoughts.
26% Self Harmed.
11% Attempted Suicide.
These are shocking figures!
We the undersigned call on the Secretary of Education and his ministers, to look into these statistics of bullying of young people in schools and implement better strategies to deal with and to stop this from happening in the future.
We ask that the Secretary of Education look into working with schools to provide an anti-bullying champion, a role that a teacher could do to improve safety in schools.
Look into educating children about bullying and the effects it has on children.
Look into the prospect of establishing funding for schools to employ Advice and guidance counsellors, that children have a good relationship with and can speak to them in confidence about issues, such as bullying.
Thank you.
