There is on average 11 million people in the UK who are deaf or hard of hearing. Anyone can suddenly become deaf at some point in their life or know someone who loses their hearing. This is an important form of communication that nearly all people should know but yet not many do. I believe this should be a core subject taught in all UK primary and secondary schools as anyone may need to know sign language at any point. Schools teach foreign languages for example French, German, Spanish etc but some people may go through life never needing to speak any of these languages, but yet deaf people are left to struggle to communicate in life due to Sign Language not being openly taught to everyone. The cost of studying a course to learn sign language can cost several hundred pounds, an expense that not many can afford but also shouldn't have to pay. Family members of someone who is deaf or suddenly lose their hearing are also expected to pay to learn sign language which also needs to stop. Please let's make British Sign Language a core subject in all UK schools to make the world a more inclusive place for everyone!
