Wexcombe started its life as a military camp and in the early 1950’s it become a home for new immigrants to our country after World War II. The suburb mainly consisted of three nissen hut designs made from majority corrugated iron. The suburb was isolated for its time but still had its own post office/general store, bus service, hall and even glee and soccer clubs.

The Western Australian Government Railways were responsible for Wexcombe and offered the nissen hut homes to their employees and families as low cost rental accommodation. A majority of the employees worked at the WAGR Workshops in Midland.

By the late 1970’s, Wexcombe had disappeared with the buildings removed and residents relocated.  A majority of the former suburb, Wexcombe has now been built over with the development of Stratton in the 1990’s. 

Wexcombe played a significant role in the local and social history of our area, unfortunately this has not been recognised anywhere within the new suburb of Stratton.

With the discovery of nissen hut remains within the 16 hectare of bushland now part of the Talbot Road Bushland. 

The Midland and Districts Historical Society Inc. would like to see those nissen hut remains preserved and appropriate interpretation developed. The Society would also like to see the Talbot Road Bushland Reserve renamed the Wexcombe Nature Reserve.

The Stratton Community Association Inc. also fully support the proposal to acknowledge the history of Wexcombe.
