No detriment rule for ALL students at BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY.

The Issue

We are calling for BIRMINGHAM CITY UNIVERSITY to implement ‘the no detriment’ rule for all students!’

The latest BCU Academic Regulation disregards students, whom joined in 2018/19 and 2019/20 from the no detriment rule. Although we have been affected by COVID-19, just like any other student. 

From 2020 onwards to present, our university education has been heavily impacted negatively due to COVID-19, lack of resource, lock down and many other issues, which has impacted our education.

This petition is asking Birmingham City University to take into account these unprecedented conditions, with the introduction of a no-detriment policy for all students!

Many students like myself whom are training to be a teacher and studying at BCU, have been impacted as our placements were disrupted due to COVID-19, workload was raised with not enough one-to-one interaction or resources, modules that were supposed to be interactive have been rearranged; meaning dates for additional training and assignments will clash and we have had either limited or no access to resource or our university library.

We have been disregarded of the no detriment rule, although we have suffered academically the same as students that have joined in 2017/18. 

The rationale to why trainee teachers are not considered for the ‘no detriment rule’ is because “It has been designed to improve students engagement with all modules and better reflect achievements.” We students strongly acknowledge the benefits this would have for our future progression. However the current issues and disruptions should be taken into consideration and it is not fair to not allow us students to have ‘the no detriment rule’ considering since 2020 we have not been in university and all lectures have been held online, which has made most of our learning independent.

We are not just asking for students that are training to be teachers, but we are asking for all students studying at Birmingham City University to be granted ‘the no detriment rule’.

Students have been struggling to study in an environment that has not allowed them to demonstrate their full potential, as well as being negatively impacted by mental or physical illness during this terrifying time and some students are key workers and have been expected to go to work to support the nation. 

This no-detriment policy would mean that students would still have to participate in end of year assessments, but without the fear that this will negatively impact the grades we have worked so hard towards during our time at university. This would mean that as long as students obtain the pass mark of 40 in further assessments, their average will remain the same as, or higher than, the average already attained. If students achieve higher than their current average in further assessments, then they can still raise their final mark.
