San Antonio's West Side already has the highest concentration of data centers in Bexar County. Now, Vantage Data Centers wants to add 32 diesel generators to its Westover Hills site, and the only thing standing between that permit and the neighborhood's air is a decision by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).

This isn't a technical permitting question. It's a question of who bears the cost of the AI boom, and who breathes the exhaust.

Diesel generators aren't clean. Even when used primarily as backup power, 32 of them represent a significant source of air pollution in a community that is already absorbing the infrastructure demands of a booming industry. District 6 Council Member Ric Galvan put it plainly: "They're looking for 32 on-site diesel generators, which would impact our air quality significantly." Residents have been reaching out to his office. They are paying attention, and they deserve more than a public comment hearing as their only chance to weigh in.

The scale of this proposal also raises hard questions about the power grid. When a single facility needs dozens of diesel backup generators, it's a signal that energy supply isn't keeping pace with demand, and that the surrounding community is being asked to absorb the risk.

TCEQ has the authority to say no. Local officials have the standing to push back. And residents have every right to demand that growth in their neighborhood doesn't come at the cost of the air they breathe.
