Deny Electric Rate Hike in Sikeston, MO

Deny Electric Rate Hike in Sikeston, MO
The Issue
As a resident of Sikeston, Missouri, and a customer of the Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities (BMU), I, like many others, am facing significant financial challenges. The recent storms have only exacerbated these hardships, causing widespread damage throughout our community. Amidst this turmoil, the proposed electric rate increase by the Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities feels like an additional burden that our community simply cannot bear.
This proposed rate hike imposes an unfair financial strain on many Sikeston residents already struggling to make ends meet. Essential bills are becoming increasingly hard to manage, and any increase in electric rates could push many into financial instability. This step feels inconsiderate and untimely, causing distress among families living paycheck to paycheck. The voices of Sikeston residents deserve to be respected and heard when it comes to matters that impact our daily lives so severely.
Furthermore, the lack of transparency surrounding the justification for these increases is troubling. The Sikeston Board of Municipal Utilities has not adequately communicated the reasons and necessity behind these changes, leaving residents in the dark about why our expenses are set to rise. It is unreasonable to expect people to shoulder such a burden without comprehensive and clear information. Especially for an issue that was known by BMU and the council since 2018 as stated in BMU's request.
We request the Sikeston City Council to engage in a thorough review of this proposal before any approval is considered. While demanding proof that both Sikeston City Council and BMU have both activitly if at all used the past 7 years knowing about the need for these intended upgrades to seek out other means to fund such. Or at the very least attempt to cut unnecessary tax spending so to divert fund'Deny Electric Rate Hike in Sikeston, MOs for the allegedly needed upgrades. Alternatively, we urge BMU to explore other options for cost management that do not involve penalizing residents already facing economic difficulties. Exploring increased efficiency measures or cutting down on unnecessary expenditures should be prioritized over shifting financial burdens to residents.
We call on the Sikeston City Council to represent our interests by denying this proposed rate increase. Our community deserves to be treated with empathy and fairness. Please support this petition and help us fight for a financially stable future by signing below.
