I have always been proud to live in Delaware County, where community health and well-being come first. Unfortunately, the recent proposal to allow an exemption for cigar bars poses a significant threat to this standard. Allowing indoor smoking in these establishments not only undermines public health efforts but could also potentially normalize smoking in a way that we've worked diligently to prevent.

The facts speak for themselves: According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, accounting for more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. The dangers of secondhand smoke are well-documented, with non-smokers risking heart disease, lung cancer, and a myriad of respiratory ailments. Indoor smoking in cigar bars means employees and patrons would be exposed, undoing years of public health progress.

Furthermore, evidence from states that have enforced strict anti-smoking laws shows economic benefits rather than drawbacks. For instance, studies have shown that smoke-free laws contribute to reduced healthcare costs and increased worker productivity. In Delaware County, safeguarding the health of our community should remain our priority rather than making exceptions that serve a few at the cost of many.

Allowing such an exemption risks setting a precedent where the health and safety of residents can be compromised. As a resident, I do not want to see a shift towards the normalization of indoor smoking, reminiscent of decades past when the dangers were not understood.

I urge the Delaware County council to consider the long-term impact on community health and reject the proposed cigar bar exemption. Let’s continue to foster a healthier, cleaner environment for future generations.
