Many Democrats who once supported a free Venezuela are now criticizing President Trump’s actions to depose Nicolás Maduro and restore a democratically-elected government.

While their hypocritical criticisms get airtime in the mainstream media, the voice of my community is not being heard. As a Venezuelan-American, I and many others like me recognize that President Trump has created the best opportunity for a free Venezuela in decades.

However, we also fear that free and fair elections in Venezuela may never become reality if the leaders of the Democratic Party don’t stand fully united behind President Trump’s effort.

That’s why I’m asking you to sign our petition telling Democrats to stop their hypocrisy, put partisan politics aside, and support President Trump’s pursuit of freedom in Venezuela.

Prominent Democrats like Senators Chuck Schumer, Amy Klobuchar, and Elizabeth Warren once said they supported removing Maduro from power and restoring free and fair elections in Venezuela. They called him illegitimate and said they supported our people. Now, for political reasons, they are hypocritically changing their tune.

They should know that Venezuelan-Americans, and voters all across the country, are paying attention.

Maduro was a brutal, illegitimate dictator who needed to go. Horrific human rights abuses were carried out by his tyranny. His support for drug cartels enriched himself and his regime while driving the people of Venezuela into poverty.

President Trump rightfully followed through on years of tough U.S. rhetoric and finally took decisive action. Because of this, the people of Venezuela finally have a real chance to turn the page from despotism and secure their freedom. The United States will be able to count Venezuela as a true ally.

But if this effort is to succeed, there MUST be bipartisan unity behind America’s leadership.
