Voter supression: Roberto Prats and VP McKlintock must resign from the PR Democratic party
The Issue
Official Resignation Petition for Roberto Prats (President) and Kenneth McClintock (Vice President) of the Democratic Party in Puerto Rico. As many of you know, Puerto Rico just held its Democratic Presidential Primaries last Sunday, June 5th. These did not occur without a number of irregularities. Let me provide some context. In 2008 Democratic Primaries on the island, there were over 2,000 polling places available for voters. This year the Democratic Party officials originally agreed to open over 1,500 polling places. It was reduced to 450 polling places because of lack of poll workers because it was held the same day as the local primaries and there were barely any certified poll workers left for the Democratic Primary, this little over a week from the primaries. But the location and process was chosen my the Puerto Rico Democratic Party. In the end there was less than 360 polling places that were actually functioning. This led to extensive lines where many voters had to wait over 4 hours in some cases. Many left the lines and were not able to exercise their democratic right to vote.
Here are some irregularities reported: When it came to Bernie Sander's poll workers, the certifications were delayed. For the prison vote, Friday June 3rd, we could not get a poll worker to be certified or be able count votes because they weren't certified on time even though the Sanders campaign handed in their paperwork within the time frame the Democratic Party allowed. We were finally able to be observers only because we brought in lawyers and by then the process was halfway. That vote was rumored to be almost unanimous for Clinton. McClintock was stating that Clinton was winning the prison vote in a Tweet he later deleted. By Saturday, June 4th the Democratic Party was still making everything impossible for the certification. The polling places were a mess, as communication failed. People did not know where they were supposed to vote (our web app crashed after 7:30-8am) even polling workers trained by the Democratic Party appeared confused. The lists were incomplete, so people had to be written in (at one point we had to use notepads, literally), if they had a voting card with an address that allowed them to vote in that precinct, they were allowed to vote. Voter’s fingers nor hands were marked as they voted, so they could vote in more than one polling place in their precinct if they chose to do so, without getting caught.
In the midst of all of this, Roberto Prats (Democratic Party president) had been falsely stating that the reason for the over 2/3 of polling places closing, was the Bernie campaign. According to him the Bernie campaign solicited the reduction due to lacking poll workers. This is simply false. Another perspective giver is that both the president and the vice-president of the democratic party in Puerto Rico are open avid Hillary Clinton supporters.
The local Democratic Party, el Partido Demócrata de Puerto Rico, is the one to blame for this debacle and after we saw and heard that they were trying to blame the Sanders’ campaign for the disaster and voter suppression we demand that they retract themselves from this obvious lie. Both are a disgrace to our local democracy and should be ashamed of themselves. At the end of the vote count (which we are still waiting for on June 7-still!) we can draw a comparison with the primary that took place 8 years ago and you will see that at least 100,000 to 200,000 less people voted this time around. These two are to blame and should take sole responsibility. For this reason we are demanding the resignation of Roberto Prats and Kenneth McClintock.
