Demanding Political Sponsorship for Iranian Political prisoners
Demanding Political Sponsorship for Iranian Political prisoners
The Issue
Petition to the United States Government
The Islamic Republic of Iran is carrying out executions following grossly unfair trials, including against political prisoners, protesters, and individuals detained solely for exercising fundamental rights such as freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and freedom of belief;
Many detainees face an imminent risk of execution after judicial proceedings that fail to meet international standards of due process, transparency, and access to independent and independent legal representation;
Political sponsorship by elected officials is a recognized and effective international human rights advocacy tool that increases visibility, accountability, and protection for individuals at risk of execution or other grave human rights violations;
The United States has a longstanding commitment to opposing arbitrary detention, torture, and extrajudicial executions, and to promoting human rights and the rule of law globally;
Therefore, we, the undersigned, call upon the United States Congress and the Government of the United States to:
Publicly support and encourage political sponsorship by Members of Congress for individuals imprisoned in Iran who face execution or risk of execution;
Urge the U.S. Department of State to formally recognize and back political sponsorship initiatives as a protective mechanism for political prisoners;
Establish or support a clear, transparent framework to facilitate and coordinate political sponsorship efforts for individuals facing execution or severe human rights violations abroad;
Take immediate diplomatic, legal, and international action to pressure the Islamic Republic of Iran to halt executions and release all political prisoners.
