We are raising urgent public awareness regarding the death of Christian Chestnut. A 37-year-old, father of Black American and Native American descent, who was killed in a reported murder-homicide case on June 7, 2024, just before 7:20 PM, at The Exchange at Decatur on Rainbow Drive in DeKalb County, Georgia. The suspect connected to the incident was Michael Durieux, an off-duty Fort Valley Police Sergeant. What makes this tragedy so disturbing are the unanswered questions surrounding accountability and transparency. Sources close to the situation state the bullets used in the incident came from the Fort Valley Police Department, despite the shooting occurring in DeKalb County.  This is the story of how a domestic violence situation involving two off-duty police officers ended with the death of an innocent Single Black Father.

Christian was not involved in law enforcement or domestic violence. He was a local creative & business man known for his humor, patience, and kindness. More than anything, he was a devoted single father who built his entire life around giving his daughter stability, love, and a meaningful future. Christian comes from a significant family that has invested a lot into the city of Atlanta. He was a well rounded gentleman working hard to carry on his family name.

 Christian and Mrs. Durieux had a brief fling in their early adult years, approximately 10 years prior to the incident at hand. According to sources close to the situation, tensions began months earlier following a family gathering in February 2024, when Michael reportedly became upset over Christian’s presence, despite there being no ongoing relationship between Christian and Mrs. Durieux. Christian attempted to peacefully de-escalate the situation, and the conflict appeared to resolve at that time. However, tensions reportedly continued in the months that followed. On June 4, 2024, Mrs. Durieux reportedly filed for divorce. Days later, she contacted Christian and asked if she could stop by his barbershop for a haircut. Christian arrived first and greeted friends and acquaintances inside the shop. While stepping outside, he noticed a young girl who appeared overheated and in need of water. He went back inside, retrieved a bottle of water, and returned to assist her. During this time, Mrs. Durieux arrived at the location. According to sources, she was allegedly unaware she was being followed.

Shortly after, Michael allegedly arrived aggressively and blocking in Christian’s running vehicle. According to witness accounts and sources close to the situation, Michael exited his vehicle and began arguing with both Mrs. Durieux and Christian before violently assaulting Mrs. Durieux in public. Christian stepped in to protect her. That intervention cost him his life. Witness accounts state that Michael shot Christian, causing him to fall to the ground. Sources further state that Michael then drove recklessly through the parking lot while recording on his cellphone before returning to where Christian lay injured. Witnesses report that Michael exited the vehicle, lifted Christian’s body, and fired additional rounds into his chest before fleeing the scene. He then drove down Candler Road at high speed, striking additional vehicles before crashing into a pole and fatally shooting himself. Christian’s daughter lost her father just weeks before her birthday on June 30th.

 According to those close to the family, there was no active public investigation communicated to them or the community. Instead, the case was treated as a murder-homicide and closed without transparent review or public accountability. The family was initially asked to allow official processes to proceed quietly and complied in good faith while awaiting answers. In the aftermath, his daughter was allegedly presented with a small financial condolence offer, which the family declined. Concerns have also been raised regarding officer mental health oversight. According to sources close to the situation, Michael Durieux had been  struggling emotionally following the passing of his mother approximately two years before the incident. Individuals familiar with him reportedly stated he “had not been himself” during that period. These concerns have raised broader public questions about mental health evaluations, wellness monitoring, and firearm access within law enforcement agencies.

According to publicly available reporting, including FOX 5 Atlanta coverage, Fort Valley Police Chief D.J. Flores described the incident as involving “selfish and senseless acts of violence.” Major Antonius Evans also spoke on behalf of the department but did not reference Christian Chestnut by name during his remarks. These differences in acknowledgment have raised concerns about how the victim’s identity and humanity were represented publicly.
