With your help, we have already gathered over 350 signatures, including former and current teachers, staff, parents, students, and even a former congressman. Showing up in-person to board meetings continues to send the message that we, concerned community members, are persistent and committed to seeing our demands through!
The attached photo is a snapshot of an engaging Monarch butterfly art project that my kindergarten class enjoyed working on each spring after reading about butterflies. I loved teaching both art and science together, as they are subjects that I am personally passionate about.
This project was not part of an adopted science curriculum. There was no official science curriculum when I was teaching kindergarten just two years ago, nor is there currently. There was no designated time in our schedules for science and art, and no professional development to support it. There was instead a short, catch-all period at the end of the day where teachers were expected to cover any subjects on the report card that were not reading and math.
K-5 teachers have to go "above and beyond" to prep thoughtful and engaging science lessons, since there is no district-adopted science curriculum. Additionally, students don't have the benefit of science lessons and units that build on and reinforce each other with each subsequent grade-level, as they do with reading and math. Teachers are expected to do the best they can to slip science in now and then, leaving inconsistent coverage of foundational science concepts over time, and across buildings and grade levels.
Join us tomorrow, Monday, October 13th at 7pm to show our school board and administrative leadership that we care about the trajectory of our children's K-5 education.
