The city of Atlanta – home of UPS headquarters – just had a record-breaking week of heat. Last Thursday was the 91st day over 90 degrees in Atlanta this year. It was also the hottest October day ever recorded in the city’s history.
Take a moment to let this sink in. By the end of 2019, UPS drivers in Atlanta will have spent more than one-third of their year working in air temps over 90 degrees. (Not to mention the high humidity, which makes it feel much hotter.) These drivers have NO AIR CONDITIONING. They are in and out of the truck cargo hold for an 8+ hour day, lifting packages up to 150lbs, with no ventilation. Drivers regularly see temps in the back of their trucks hit 140 degrees and higher in this kind of weather, putting them at extreme risk of heat stroke.
Meanwhile, in the very same city, UPS execs are sitting in their comfortable offices with plenty of A/C.
