Demand Universities to Allow Students to Continue Studies During Medical Recovery

The Issue

An unexpected health setback has altered my life's path and led my university to enforce an "involuntary leave of absence". This abrupt decision has shaken my world, stripping away my educational lifeline, a secure roof above my head, the camaraderie of friends and professors, my chances to a bright future, and a job that supported my much-needed treatment expenses. They have even disregarded my statement that the best possible thing for me would be to remain in school. My dignity has been seriously impacted.

However, my case isn't exceptional. Countless students across our nation experience similar predicaments. The National Alliance on Mental Illness discovered that one in four college students struggles with a diagnosable mental health condition that could demand a treatment period and affect their academic functioning. Yet, universities continue turning a blind eye, often ousting these students from their campuses, jeopardising their mental health, academic progress, and careers.

Universities must adopt more compassionate, inclusive policies, respecting every student's rights to education and maintaining their emotional well-being. They must understand that students battling health issues need more than just medical care - they need their educational, social, and professional lives to remain intact.

We need your help. Not for righting a personal injustice, but for bringing about a change in how our education institutions deal with students fighting health battles. We are not asking for special privileges, but for our rights – as students, as humans.

Join me in urging Roberts Wesleyan University to adopt policies that allow students to continue their studies during medical recovery. Please assist in altering the narrative of compassion and inclusion in academia.
