The Issue

Right now, there is a real threat that social security payments will be interrupted and a call to action is needed!

According to a Newsweek article dated 4/23/25, Former Social Security Commissioner Martin O'Malley is warning that benefit payments could soon be delayed for millions of Americans, citing deep staffing cuts and internal chaos at the Social Security Administration (SSA) under the Trump administration. Speaking at a public forum in Long Island on 4/21/25, O'Malley said he believes an interruption in payments could be imminent.

O'Malley's warning is valid. As a retired technology sector employee, I know computer system failures are a risk when changes are being implemented.  Therefore, we have to be prepared to help seniors avoid the financial disaster this would cause.

Now, I am one among millions of Americans who depend entirely on the Social Security check we receive to maintain a roof over our heads. Social Security is a major source of income for most people over age 65.  Many of us do not have a savings account or alternative financial resources to pay our rent. Unfortunately, whenever there's an interruption in digital or print distribution of Social Security checks, the fear of eviction hovers over us and pushes us towards the brink of homelessness.

As for other assistance, it’s essential to understand a harsh reality…that local resources for rent relief have limited funding and often, the processing time exceeds our capacity to wait. As such, an executive order banning foreclosures, evictions, any discriminatory legal action, and/or associated fees (including late fees) for all Social Security benefit recipients under such circumstances would not merely be a relief, but it is the best safety net America can offer her citizens.

According to a report by the National Council on Aging, over 25 million Americans aged 60+ are economically insecure - living at or below 250% of the federal poverty level. With already meager resources, any interruption in Social Security benefit distribution could be devastating. We urge the authorities to enact an executive order to safeguard the rights and the homes of those who have relied on this nation the most.

We beseech our lawmakers to recognize the dire situation in which interruptions in Social Security payments place the beneficiaries and take immediate action to prevent any foreclosures, evictions, related legal action, and associated fees under such circumstances. We need a safety net; we need a guarantee that our homes are secure, even in uncertainty.

Please sign this petition to demand the immediate enactment of an executive order banning foreclosures and evictions for all Social Security benefit recipients in the event of any disruptions of benefit payment distribution. Your signature can make a difference. Be a part of this urgent call for change.
