As a concerned parent in the Lake Washington School District, I am deeply worried about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and materials for our children, especially those under the age of 13. Our kids are increasingly exposed to AI tools that collect, store, and sometimes even share personal data. I believe that parents have a right to be fully informed and to consent to the use of such technologies in the classroom.

AI applications can record and store sensitive information about our children, potentially exposing it to third parties. Students who are not yet mature enough to understand the implications of these technologies may be vulnerable to data breaches and misuse of their personal information. As parents, we deserve the choice to opt out of AI usage in schools and have alternative educational materials provided without AI involvement, such as written forms to compensate for the missed lessons.

Furthermore, I am advocating for transparency and notice about the integration of AI in educational settings. Parents should receive detailed information before the start of the school year regarding any AI applications and lesson plans that are being developed. This will give us the necessary time to make a well-informed decision about our children’s participation.

Our children’s privacy and security should always be a priority, and we need a system in place that respects parental consent and choice. I urge Lake Washington School District to implement policies ensuring transparency and parental consent in the use of AI technologies.
