The Issue

Demand Transparency and Review in the Case of Sunshine Bonanza and Moonlight Bonanza

As supporters of animal welfare and responsible governance, we are deeply concerned about the handling of two pregnant mares, Sunshine Bonanza and Moonlight Bonanza, belonging to Bonanza Stables and Royan Smith, who arrived at a Grenadian port on May 29, 2026.

Following their arrival, the horses were euthanized shortly after, amid reports of concerns relating to import documentation and veterinary health findings, including Babesiosis.

This situation has raised public questions regarding the decision-making process, timing, and communication between the relevant authorities and the importer.

Our Concern

Members of the public are seeking clarity on:

How veterinary assessments were conducted and reviewed

Whether standard import and quarantine procedures were fully applied

How communication was handled with the importer prior to irreversible action

Whether all procedural safeguards were properly followed

The concern is not only about this individual case, but about ensuring that clear, transparent, and consistent procedures exist for all imported animals.

Our Call for Action

We respectfully call on the relevant Grenadian authorities, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Health, to:

1. Provide Full Transparency

Release a clear account of the procedures and decision-making process used in this case, including veterinary and administrative inputs.

2. Clarify Import and Biosecurity Procedures

Explain how import documentation, quarantine considerations, and veterinary assessments are applied in urgent biosecurity situations.

3. Strengthen Safeguards

Review current protocols to ensure:

Clear communication with importers

Proper veterinary consultation and documentation

Consistent application of quarantine and review procedures

Transparent decision-making before irreversible actions

Closing Statement

We support animal welfare, biosecurity enforcement, and responsible governance. However, these must always be balanced with transparency, fairness, and consistent procedural safeguards.

This petition is submitted in the public interest to encourage clarity, trust, and improvement in how similar cases are handled in the future.
