The Issue

In a world where technology increasingly encroaches on our personal lives, I am deeply concerned about the potential for surveillance technology to infringe upon our fundamental rights to privacy and freedom. I support public safety initiatives and have great respect for law enforcement agencies dedicated to protecting our community. However, these efforts should not come at the cost of our privacy rights.

When it comes to Flock Safety cameras and automated license plate reader (ALPR) systems, we must prioritize clear and comprehensive policies that safeguard the public's interest. These systems, while potentially beneficial for law enforcement, also have significant implications for individual privacy. A database that stores records of our movements and can be searched later poses serious privacy concerns. As citizens, we deserve to live our lives without constant surveillance.

Therefore, I am petitioning Angola and Steuben County officials to implement the following measures:

1. **Set clear limits on data retention:** Any license plate data collected should be stored for a limited time and securely disposed of afterward. Long-term retention of such information creates unnecessary privacy risks.

2. **Ensure transparency in data access and usage:** The public must know who can access the collected data and for what purposes. Transparency is crucial to maintaining public trust in these systems.

3. **Mandate public reporting and oversight:** Regular, detailed public reports on the use of ALPR data should be required. Oversight mechanisms should be established to ensure searches are conducted legally and ethically.

4. **Protect against unwarranted tracking of individuals:** Strong protections must be in place to prevent the tracking of individuals' movements over extended periods without proper justification.

Let's strive for a balanced approach that respects both public safety and individual privacy. By signing this petition, you are calling for our local officials to enact policies that ensure Flock Safety cameras and ALPR systems are used responsibly and with respect to privacy rights. Join me in demanding safeguards that protect our freedoms while supporting a safe and secure community. Together, we can make a difference.
