The Issue

I have been driving for Uber and Lyft, dedicating long hours every week to provide safe, reliable transportation to the countless passengers who depend on these services. However, it has become increasingly disheartening to see the same dedication not reciprocated when it comes to fair compensation and transparency about fare calculations and commissions.

As rideshare drivers, we operate in an environment where communication about our livelihood is murky at best. Over time, we've witnessed a noticeable decline in the fares paid by passengers, yet the portion we receive continues to shrink. Uber and Lyft’s operations lack transparency in how they determine the cut they take from each ride's fare, leaving drivers like myself in a constant state of uncertainty.

Statistically, rideshare drivers spend an average of 8-12 hours on the road daily, dealing with traffic congestion, vehicle maintenance costs, and fluctuating gas prices. Yet, despite these challenges, the compensation structure has not evolved to match the increasing operational costs. According to the Rideshare Guy’s survey of over 1000 drivers in 2023, 58% of drivers reported earning less now than in previous years, directly impacting our ability to support our families.

We are calling on Uber and Lyft to engage in open dialogues about their pricing strategies with their drivers. We demand transparency in fare and commission structures to ensure that drivers receive a fair share of the ride costs. Moreover, these companies should establish a minimum compensation guarantee that aligns with inflation and rising living costs.

We urge Uber and Lyft to value their drivers’ contributions, as their success hinges on our efforts behind the wheels. Transparent pricing and fair pay aren’t just business ethics – they are moral imperatives.

Join us in demanding justice and fairness for those who drive Toronto’s bustling streets and the countless roads beyond. Sign this petition to stand with us as we strive for a more equitable rideshare industry.
