Demand transparency and accountability in UK veterinary care #JusticeForElva
The Issue
My dog Elva tragically passed away following an unacceptable 9-hour delay in receiving emergency surgery at Vets4Pets Birstall Leeds. During this distressing ordeal, I discovered that a tampon had been inserted without my consent, sedation was not properly recorded, and despite paying an upfront fee of £1,500, I was confronted with a £3,500 loan form without any clear treatment plan. Elva's body remains in deep freeze, reserved for forensic review as I seek answers and justice.
This heartbreaking experience has made me take a stand – not just for Elva but for countless other families who may endure similar injustices and sufferings. I have filed an official complaint with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS), yet I hold genuine concern that it may not reach a resolution. That is why I am reaching out to the public, stepping beyond personal grief to voice a collective response.
Veterinary care should be rooted in compassion and trust, guided by clear and transparent practices. No pet owner should face financial coercion, inadequate consent procedures, or improper medical recording while seeking aid for their beloved companions. Vets4Pets and similar veterinary service providers must implement transparent guidelines and accountable practices to prevent such occurrences.
Furthermore, I urge RCVS to effectively oversee and regulate veterinary operations to prevent future negligence and misconduct from harming more families and their pets. Our pets depend on us to protect them, and we entrust veterinarians to provide competent, humane, and ethical care.
I invite you, the community of West Yorkshire, and beyond, to unite in demanding accountability, transparency, and justice for Elva and pets everywhere. Together, let's call for systemic improvements in veterinary care standards to ensure such a tragedy does not happen again.

Elva's story
Elva was admitted to Vets4Pets Birstall Leeds on 20th July 2025 for emergency surgery with suspected pyometra and was already showing signs of systemic collapse. I’ve had a dog with pyometra before, so I recognised the signs immediately. My son’s girlfriend told staff this at the time of admission, and I personally confirmed it by phone about an hour or so later. Despite repeated requests, surgery was delayed for over 9 hours. During that time:
A tampon was inserted rectally without consent or documentation. I’m still unclear at what stage of her treatment this occurred, but I later found a crude handwritten note scrawled across her clinical records stating “tampon up bum” — with no explanation, timestamp, or supporting detail
Sedation was administered but not recorded
A £3,500 loan form was sent three hours before surgery
Clinical notes contradict verbal disclosures and appear to have been retro-edited
Consent pathways were ignored, and after Elva passed, I brought her body home and placed it in deep freeze for forensic review — a step I took myself to preserve evidence and ensure accountability
Elva was admitted by my son’s girlfriend, who informed staff she suspected pyometra, a life-threatening condition. Despite this, clinical notes stated Elva was “not showing overt signs.” After hours of delay, they later decided it was pyometra — by which point her condition had deteriorated significantly
Clinical notes suggest Elva’s womb had already ruptured before surgery, yet I was told at the time that the rupture occurred during the operation — a serious contradiction that raises concerns about the accuracy and integrity of the records
Elva developed sepsis and died, which most likely could have been prevented had she received emergency surgery when I first requested it. The delay in treatment directly contributed to her deterioration and death
While I was rushing back from Lincolnshire, I received a call asking me to pay £1,500 via Klarna. Then, at 9pm that same day, I was asked to fill in loan forms for £3,500 — without any written treatment plan or explanation of what they were doing
They could have emailed me a written treatment plan and approximate costings, but instead I was pressured to commit to a loan late at night, with no documentation or clarity
Elva survived the operation, but the time it was performed was not documented in her clinical notes, which breaches RCVS guidelines. She later developed sepsis, and staff stated they had administered an unlicensed drug in an attempt to save her. She was put to sleep on 21st July in the late afternoon, but no time of death was recorded — despite the fact that we were with her when she passed
Her admission notes incorrectly stated that Elva was spayed, even though she was not. A spayed dog cannot develop pyometra, which raises serious concerns about the accuracy of the records and the possibility of retro-editing to cover clinical misjudgement
I’ve connected with other families on social media who’ve had similar experiences with Vets4Pets — no treatment plan, incoherent notes, and tragic loss. Elva’s story is not an anomaly
I’m heartbroken. Since Elva’s death, I’ve reached out to several social media groups and found families with eerily similar experiences at Vets4Pets — no treatment plan, nonsensical clinical notes, and devastating outcomes. This isn’t an isolated case. It’s a pattern, and it needs to be exposed
I’ve recently learned that another person is currently pursuing a complaint with the RCVS regarding Vets4Pets Birstall Leeds. Their dog was treated at the same clinic and suffered brain damage due to incorrect medication and false claims about blood tests that were never performed.
This case has been ongoing for over a year without resolution. The fact that multiple families are reporting serious clinical and documentation failures at the same practice reinforces my concern that Elva’s case is not isolated.
I respectfully request that the RCVS consider these cases in parallel and assess whether they reflect a broader safeguarding issue. I am also seeking clarity on the status of my own complaint and next steps
