The Issue

We, the citizens of Liberia and members of the Liberian diaspora, are calling for urgent transparency, investigation, and accountability regarding environmental conditions surrounding the operations of Bea Mountain Mining Corporation.

Since mining operations began in 2016, there have been ongoing public concerns about environmental contamination affecting nearby communities. Reports and discussions have referenced the presence of hazardous substances such as cyanide, arsenic, mercury, and copper in surrounding waterways.

Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet many Liberians living near mining areas continue to raise concerns about:

Water quality and safety
Environmental degradation
Health impacts within their communities
These concerns have persisted across multiple administrations, raising serious questions about regulatory enforcement and long-term environmental protection

The Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), conducted in 2016 prior to the start of mining operations, outlined:

Expected environmental impact
Risk mitigation strategies
Safety commitments to the Liberian people
Releasing this document will help determine:

What level of environmental impact was originally anticipated
What protections were promised to affected communities
Whether current environmental conditions exceed those projections
If current conditions surpass those outlined in the EIS, this may indicate non-compliance with environmental obligations under the Mineral Development Agreement (MDA).

*We respectfully call on the Government of Liberia, EPA, and Ministry of Mines & Energy to:

Release the 2016 Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for public review
Conduct and publish independent, up-to-date environmental testing reports
Provide clear findings on water safety in affected communities
Investigate whether mining operations are in full compliance with Section 16 of the MDA
Ensure greater transparency and citizen involvement in future agreements
