A petition has been created by a group of concerned Allan Gardens neighbourhood residents to demand the City of Toronto to help the homeless campers to find housing and restore the park for everyone.
The encampment at Allan Gardens has been going on for over 2 years now, it is getting worse each day as the weather gets warmer. It now has more than half of the encampment in the entire CIty's park space. It is getting dangerous to the campers and neighbourhood residents. A murder and a stabbing had already happened in recent months.
On May 10, this was reported by one of the neighbourhood residents:
"I just walked through Allan Gardens. And I honestly just don’t have words anymore. Huge groups of parties. Loud music. Drinking. A number of campers now have aggressive dogs NOT on a leash. I saw someone defecating on the grass. A guy that was absolutely hammered trying to chop wood with an axe. An indigenous woman being hit by her boyfriend and crying. Absolute chaos. And security NOWHERE to be seen.
WHEN something happens—not IF—I’d like to know who at the City should be held accountable for it. Because the risk to EVERYONE here is plain to see."
The petition www.change.org/AllanGardens has over 600 signatures and is growing. There are comments created by signatories that you should read and know the frustrations that we feel. We have reached the point that leaving the encampment in Allan Gardens alone is no longer an option. The encampment must be cleared, immediately, with the assumption that some form of housing is offered to all campers. In addition, offer mental health/addiction support to help them if necessary. Refusal of an offer of housing does not entitle campers to stay in the park. Steps must be taken to prevent any new camps set up in Allan Gardens or neighbourhood parks after it has been cleared. City Council MUST ACT NOW TO FIX THIS before someone else gets hurt or killed.
