The respect and dignity of every resident in Orem, UT, USA is at stake. During a recent "hot mic" incident during the Orem City Council meeting on November 14th over Zoom, our City Councilmember Tom Macdonald was inadvertently captured expressing disdain for us - the residents of Orem. His words were, "The good guys don't come to city council meetings. I mean, the good guys from the community. So we just hear this trash as though it's the common voice."

This statement is not only disrespectful but also undermines democratic values that encourage citizen participation in local governance. It raises serious questions about his ability to fairly represent all constituents and uphold his duty as a public servant.

As residents of Orem city, we deserve representatives who treat us with respect and value our voices regardless of their personal opinions or biases. This incident has eroded trust between citizens and their elected representative which can have long-term negative effects on community engagement.

It is unacceptable for any public official to refer to their constituents as "trash". Such behavior goes against the principles of respect, fairness and integrity that should guide all those in public service.

We demand Tom Macdonald's immediate resignation from his position as an Orem city council member due to his derogatory remarks about residents during an official meeting.
