As a passionate supporter of Cardiff Rugby and a proud Welshman, I am deeply troubled by the prospect of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) selling Cardiff Rugby to Y11 Sports and Media. Y11 already owns the Ospreys, and this development seems to bypass the WRU's previously announced plan to reduce Wales' four rugby regions through a tender process. This move appears to set the stage for a merger between Ospreys and Cardiff Rugby, a decision I vehemently oppose.

This issue isn't simply about my beloved team—it impacts the entirety of Welsh rugby. The Ospreys are a highly successful team, contributing significantly to our national squad. The WRU's decision to sell could undermine the foundational structure that allows for the flourishing of talent crucial for our National Team. Notably, both Ospreys and Cardiff Rugby have had seven players each called up for the Six Nations, illustrating their vital role in nurturing the future of Welsh rugby.

Rugby is an integral part of our national identity, and the strength of our regional teams ensures Wales remains competitive on the international stage. The potential merger, facilitated by this sale, could dilute the competitive spirit and limit opportunities for upcoming talent—players who could one day represent Wales on the global stage. Furthermore, such a merger would diminish the rich history and rivalry that Cardiff Rugby shares with the Ospreys and other teams.

The WRU should seek alternative solutions to maintain and even strengthen the existing regional framework without resorting to eliminations or mergers that could weaken team identities. Perhaps reconsidering the allocation of resources or fostering collaboration between regions without erasing them could prove beneficial. Every fan, every player, and every region should have a voice in decisions that reshape our rugby future.
