Every year during the month of June, the San Francisco Giants fly the Pride Flag at their stadium to celebrate and honor LGBTQ+ Pride Month. This act is meant to symbolize the organization’s commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. However, at the end of June, the Pride Flag is quickly taken down, which sends a message that their support is limited to just one month a year, or that they are not comfortable showing this support outside the month of June.

Several players on the team have engaged in a form of protest against Pride Month: a misguided attempt to weaponize a Bible verse about love for all living things against a vulnerable minority. Team leadership has failed to properly address this issue or take a stand in support of LGBTQ+ San Franciscans and baseball fans. It is more important than ever for the San Francisco Giants organization to reinforce their commitment to the LGBTQ+ communities. The simplest way for the Giants to do this is to leave their Pride Flag flying in its current location permanently.

San Francisco is a city with a rich history of activism and advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights. As a representative of this community, the San Francisco Giants have the responsibility to lead by example and demonstrate unwavering support for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion by keeping the Pride Flag up throughout the entire year. The presence of the Pride Flag is a reminder of the struggles faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the continued fight for equal rights. It serves as an emblem of hope and solidarity for LGBTQ+ fans, players, employees, and community members who look to the Giants as an inclusive and supportive organization. 

Keeping the Pride Flag displayed year-round at Oracle Park would set a precedent for other sports teams, showing that the Giants' commitment to diversity and inclusion is not just a performative gesture limited to one month. It would affirm the organization's genuine commitment to creating an inclusive environment for all fans, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. 

It's time for the Giants to take permanent action (or rather, inaction, as we are asking that the team simply not take the flag down) that aligns with the values of their hometown and fan base. Let’s ensure that the display of the Pride Flag becomes a year-long tradition, and show the world that the San Francisco Giants truly stand with the LGBTQ+ community every day of the year.
