The Issue

The unnecessary death of a beloved family pet at the hands of Officer Karl Lampkin of the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) has left a family in deep grief and the community in fear. The dog in question was a small, harmless creature that posed no threat when it was shot five times by Officer Lampkin. Following this harrowing incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s Response to Resistance Board shockingly found his actions within departmental guidelines, and there has since been no public record of Officer Lampkin facing any disciplinary action or being terminated from his post.

This incident highlights a significant and worrying problem within our police departments – that there appear to be limited consequences for behavior that causes pain and hurt to animals and their families. This isn't an isolated case. Shockingly, approximately every 98 minutes in the United States, a dog is shot by a law enforcement officer, according to an independent study by the Puppycide Database Project. We cannot stand by whilst these shocking statistics continue to rise.

Therefore, this petition seeks not only the dismissal of Officer Lampkin but also for him to never be allowed to serve as a police officer again. We aim to bring about change by ensuring systems and guidelines are put in place that will prevent this harsh treatment of our innocent animals. This cause is close to our hearts, and we feel immense empathy for other families who experience this senseless loss and shock.

Don't let another harmless pet become a victim. People entrust law enforcement officers with their safety and the protection of all members of their family, including their pets. It's time those in power uphold this trust. Please sign this petition and help us seek justice for the innocent animal lives lost at the hands of those meant to serve and protect.
