The Issue

My family’s privacy matters, and we deserve transparency about surveillance in our community. The presence of Flock license plate reader cameras throughout St. Tammany Parish is an infringement on our privacy and freedoms. These devices not only collect and store data on our vehicle movements, but also represent a form of mass surveillance that we have not consented to.

St. Tammany Parish residents should be able to move freely without the fear of being tracked or having their data logged indefinitely. The constant collection of this data—on all vehicles traveling within the parish, at all times—constitutes a massive overreach of governmental power. Just for driving on public roads, every resident's movements are tracked, information that could potentially be misused or hacked. We deserve the right to privacy, which is compromised by such pervasive surveillance measures.

Across the United States, concerns about automated surveillance are growing. According to the ACLU, the use of automatic license plate readers (ALPRs) imperils privacy rights, as it recklessly stores information that can trace a person's movements over days, weeks, or even months. This concern has prompted several communities to dismantle similar technologies, and St. Tammany Parish should follow suit.

The presence of these cameras lacks transparency. We have not been adequately informed about where this data is stored, who has access, how long it is kept, and what security measures are in place to protect it. There is also general lack of public forums or discussions about the need for such technology or its potential implications on our freedoms.

Therefore, we demand the immediate removal of all Flock license plate reader cameras and call for a permanent ban on their deployment in the future within St. Tammany Parish.

This is not just about restoring our sense of privacy but also about setting a precedent in protecting our personal freedoms from government overreach. Please join us in demanding action. Sign this petition to safeguard our privacy and make our voices heard.
