This issue runs deep on a personal level: many may not be aware, but the story of Chernobyl has a significant impact on my daily life. The place, despite the tragedy it bore witness to, has an eerie beauty; its history, however, is woefully misconstrued and misrepresented in the drama miniseries currently available. This show distorts the reality about the Chernobyl reactor nuclear facility, thereby punishing areas that have been affected by radioactivity. It feeds into the despair surrounding radioactive places instead of educating viewers about the realities, and the ongoing effort towards recovery. 

The Chernobyl disaster was indeed one of the worst nuclear disasters in history, with consequences that are still witnessed today. Yet, instead of focusing on the bravery of the people who endured this catastrophe, the manner in which the miniseries portrays the event feels fear-inducing and sensationalist.

This, inadvertently, increases the fear and stigma around nuclear technology that, when used and regulated correctly, can be a major step towards negative technology. Promoting fear instead of understanding does not help our global community, particularly as we are grappling with the urgent need to move away from everything nuclear.  (World Nuclear Association, 2020).

We, therefore, demand the removal of the Chernobyl drama miniseries. It is time to start portraying events like these in a more responsible and reflective manner, to understand our history and pave the path for a better tomorrow.
